Weighing product mixtures with up to eight components

The successful Swiss company Delica AG founded more than 50 years ago specializes in the procurement, refining and marketing of high quality ingredients from all over the world. The focuses here are in the areas of coffee and durable food items such as, dried fruits, nuts and kernels, spices, leguminous plants, dried mushrooms and tea - highest quality products. The company therefore relies exclusively on the multi-head weighing systems from MULTIPOND for good reasons: ''Maximum accuracy plays a particularly important role for our high quality products. And also reliability and ease of use. We feel we are in extremely good hands here with MULTIPOND'', says Roger Gadient from the Engineering Department. Only recently, a further weighing system, an MP 1601-FFC-S5, was purchased for the factory in Birsfelden, Switzerland.
The decisive factors for the purchase of the new weigher were the feeding and being able to weigh product mixtures with up to eight different components and always being able to guarantee the same mixing ratio of the individual components in the final packaging. An existing memory weigher, an MP 1601-C-S5, was integrated into a new mixing concept. MULTIPOND’s solution was to combine the outputs of two multi-head weighing systems with a rotary product transfer system.
A particular challenge for this project implementation was the extremely low ceiling height (3.50 m). Both weighers, together with the rotary transfer system were supported on a platform which was suspended from the ceiling. Product feed was from the floor above via MULTIPOND BE 2000 Vibratory Conveyors.
The individual mixture components are conveyed via the vibrating BE 2000’s into the weighing system. The MULTIPOND uses its unique twin memory hopper system to vastly increase the number of possible combinations which is ultimately the basis for maximum accuracy and speed.
A Micro-Processor determines the best combination available from the part portions which come closest to the component target weight.
The output from the weighers is combined to give mixtures of up to eight ingredients each. The transfer system discharges the combined product into the packaging machine.
The system runs constantly and reliably with up to 50 weighings per minute. A total of approx. 680,000 packages per month will be weighed with this system. The product target weights of the final package are between 200g and 500g.
''We are in extremely good hands with MULTIPOND for the implementation of this complex project. The company specializes in individual solutions. The short paths and instances were a great benefit for the implementation. All parties have contributed their part by active exchange of information to complete the project successfully. The result completely meets our expectations'', says Roger Gadient of the Engineering Department. The overall design of the weighing solution even makes it possible to weigh sticky and difficult products such as dried plums and apricots without problems. Altogether approx. sixty different subcomponents, from dry fruit to diverse types of nuts, will be weighed with this system.
MULTIPOND is the sales and service division of the German based manufacturing company ATOMA which has been established since 1946. The first automatic weighing system for the packaging industry was launched in 1963.
Headquarters and manufacturing facilities are in Waldkraiburg, Germany, about 65km east of Munich. Beside the global network of sales and service representatives, there are four wholly owned sales and service subsidiaries in the UK, the Netherlands, France and the US.
