Success Story

MULTIPOND multihead weigher for weighing of grated Emmentaler with maximum efficiency

Fromager Savoyard Sas, a family-owned company founded in 1921, specializes in the preparation, packaging and marketing of French Emmentaler. About 6,000 t - 7,000 t of cheese are packaged annually, although the company has a capacity of 10,000 t. Depending on the number of orders, between 33 and 43 employees work at the facility in Montmélian.
The collaboration of the cheese producer (formerly Dominici) with MULTIPOND started decades ago. Jacques Dominici, owner of the company, does not need to be convinced about the weighing systems from MULTIPOND: "The company's multihead weighers provide maximum flexibility, allowing us to address today's ever more challenging requirements. In this field, MULTIPOND was always a step ahead." For instance, just recently an additional MULTIPOND Type MP 20-2400/1250-H (2x10) multihead weigher for weighing unpowdered grated cheese was installed.
The grated cheese is transported to the weigher by a patented Liftvac belt conveyor system. An adjustable special infeed funnel above the distribution cone ensures uniform product distribution to the feed trays, which is the basis for the ultimate in precision and speed. Since unpowdered grated cheese is extremely adhesive, the feed trays have been provided with a tex-
tured metal surface and a special Teflon coating in order
to achieve ideal product flow. The cheese first proceeds via the radially arranged feed trays to the prefeed hoppers, and then to the weigh hoppers underneath. Maximum accuracy and availability are provided by the calibration systems integrated in each load cell, which makes completely automatic calibration possible even during production. Using the individual partial portions in the weigh hoppers, a computer determines the combination which corresponds to the target weight to be achieved or is closest to it.
Compared to conventional timing hopper concepts, the combination of the weighing system with the patented "SB-DSE" high-speed product transfer system (double receiver) provides up to 40 % higher speeds together with maximum output. Filling and transfer operations take place simultaneously. Furthermore, the "SB-DSE" features a reject option for short weights, which was switched off at Fromager Savoyard, because there were no rejects, according to production manager Laprevote. One of the major benefits of this system is precisely centered transfer of portions to the format tube of the packaging machine, in this case, an FFS - form fill seal machine from Bosch. This prevents contact between the portions and format tube, keeping the portions compact as they enter the packaging machine.
The weigher is controlled and operated using a convenient color touchscreen monitor. All product contact parts can be removed for cleaning, product changes and maintenance easily without tools.
The machine is cleaned once a day with air and once a week with liquid cleaners.
On average, about 3 million bags (with target weights between 200 g and 1,000 g) are packaged every month. The weigher operates in 2-shift production at about 100 weighings per minute, and is not yet utilized to full capacity. Production manager Laprevote comments: We place a high value on tightly sealed bags, which is why we have limited the speed to 100 weighings per minute. This translates into a maximum of 1 complaint about a leaky bag for every 3 million bags, a result with which we are more than satisfied. We have always set a high quality standard for ourselves, which is why we feel in good company with MULTIPOND. Our cooperation with MULTIPOND Service is excellent – telephone support is available whenever we need help quickly. A close and readily accessible spare parts supply was an additional criterion for us.“
MULTIPOND is the sales and service division of the German based manufacturing company ATOMA which has been established since 1946. The first automatic weighing system for the packaging industry was launched in 1963. It is positioned as the market leading innovator in the design and manufacture of customized multihead weighing systems for the packaging industry. Headquarters and manufacturing facilities are in Waldkraiburg, Germany, about 65km east of Munich. Beside the global network of sales and service representatives, there are four wholly owned sales and service subsidiaries in the UK, the Netherlands, France and the US.
